For years, tabloids and viral accounts have been assembling a second London: no-go zones, Sharia courts, streets nobody dares walk down. Millions of people who have never set foot here believe in it. In the real one, 2025 brought the lowest homicide rate since records began. Here are fourteen of the claims, each one set against the public record.
Go to the 14 claims ↓Most of these stories don’t start out as lies. They start as something small and true: one statistic, one real incident. Then they go round a loop, and each time round a bit more of the context falls off.
Someone lifts a single figure, or a single crime, out of everything around it and posts it as proof of decline.
Partisan outlets and big accounts wrap it in a culture-war frame and put it in front of audiences of millions.
By the time it comes back round it is common knowledge. Everyone knows London has fallen. Nobody can say any more where they first heard it.
Each one gives the claim as its loudest advocates actually make it, who made it, and what the record says. Some start from something real that has been stretched out of shape. Those are marked as such, because pretending otherwise would be doing the same trick back. Filter by theme, or read the lot.

“More dangerous than New York” is the claim everything else rests on. Here is how the homicide rates actually compare, using the figures the Met and City Hall published in January 2026.
London recorded 97 homicides in 2025, its fewest since 2014, in a city that added more than half a million people over the same decade. That works out at 1.1 per 100,000: below New York, Berlin, Toronto and Milan, and nowhere near the American cities that never make it into the comparison. Teenage homicide is down 73% on 2021. Eight young people were killed last year, which is eight too many and a long way from a war zone.

If London were the frightened, failing city of the story, somebody would have to account for the rest of it. This is the same year, on the record.

London is the stage. The argument is about immigration, and about who a country belongs to, and London is simply the most convenient place to hold it. That argument is worth having honestly. It is not worth having against a city somebody made up. Every figure above is public and sourced below. Go and check them.
This site argues a case. It is not neutral and doesn’t pretend to be. What it does is take each claim as its loudest advocates actually make it and check it against published data. Two things in here are true and are said so: knife offences did rise sharply in the late 2010s, and the White British share of London did fall below half. Leaving those out would make the rest easier to write and much easier to dismiss. Figures are current to the dates shown and will move; the datasets are public and updated, so check them yourself.
